Exploring Trove: A Modern and Geometric Display Font

As I sat down to start a new branding project for a local café, I opened my design software and stared at the blank brand board. The first step in any branding project is always the most crucial: choosing the right font. Today, I decided to test out Trove, a modern and geometrically shaped display font, to see how it would fit into the café's visual identity.

Visual Characteristics and Personality

Trove immediately caught my eye with its clean, angular lines and contemporary feel. The font’s geometric shapes give it a bold and structured appearance, making it stand out in any design. It has a modern, almost futuristic vibe, which can be both a strength and a limitation, depending on the project.

Testing Trove in Logo Design

I started by using Trove in a logo concept for the café. The font’s strong, sharp edges added a sense of professionalism and modernity to the design. The café’s name, “Café Lumina,” looked striking and memorable, perfectly capturing the café’s vision of being a bright, welcoming space. However, I noticed that the geometric shapes could make the text feel a bit rigid, so I experimented with some softer elements to balance it out.

Brand Identity and Packaging Design

Next, I moved on to the brand board. Trove worked beautifully as a headline font, complementing the café’s vibrant color palette and minimalist design. For the packaging mockup, I used Trove on a coffee bag label. The font’s clarity and boldness made the product information easy to read, even from a distance. However, I found that for smaller text, such as ingredient lists or fine print, a more readable sans serif font would be necessary.

Social Media and Web Design

When I tested Trove in social media graphics, it performed exceptionally well. The font’s unique style made Instagram posts and Facebook banners stand out, creating a strong and consistent brand presence. For the café’s website, I used Trove in the hero section and for key headings. It added a touch of sophistication and modernity, making the site look professional and engaging. However, for longer paragraphs and body text, I opted for a clean, legible sans serif to ensure readability.

Font Pairing and Practical Advice

To create a balanced and versatile typography system, I paired Trove with a classic serif font, Merriweather, and a clean sans serif, Roboto. This combination allowed for a harmonious blend of modern and traditional elements, enhancing the overall brand identity. When testing Trove in various design assets, I also explored its included styles and weights. The font comes with a range of options, including regular, bold, and italic, which provided flexibility for different design needs.

Before finalizing the design, I made sure to review the commercial font licensing to ensure that Trove was suitable for use in the café’s branding, packaging, and digital platforms. This step is crucial for any designer to avoid potential legal issues and to ensure the client’s peace of mind.

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

In summary, Trove is a fantastic choice for projects that require a modern, geometric, and impactful display font. Its bold and structured appearance makes it ideal for branding, posters, web design, and social media graphics. However, for long-form text, small sizes, and formal corporate use, a more readable typeface may be necessary. By carefully considering the font’s strengths and limitations, and pairing it with complementary typefaces, Trove can be a valuable addition to any designer’s toolkit.
